Health at work: could it work better?

How often have you or your colleagues been off work sick in the last year?

Most of us will have been off at some point for one reason or another - be it with the kind of cold or mild flu that lays us low for a day or two.

Thankfully much less common is the need for long-term sickness absence. And an article in the Telegraph recently shows that, while not as common as the odd day or two off ill here and there, it's still a pretty considerable expense - with long term sickness absence being estimated at a whopping £3.1 billion yearly cost to the private sector.

However, the picture isn't quite as bad as it may seem at first sight. Sickness absence as a whole is less than it has been at times in the past. According to this release by the UK Press Association, 178 million working days were lost to sickness in 1993 compared to 131 million in 2011, this is based on official figres from the National office for Statistics.

There are various means by which businesses can help to minimise sickness absence generally - these can include some measures such as the following

  • providing an employee assistance program
  • promoting health and wellbeing within the organisation
  • draw up and put into practice an occupational health scheme
  • provide private healthcare insurance for staff

For more info on sickness absence management, check out the CIPD website (Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development) - and there's also some good online resources from the Health & Safety Executive and the government's Business Link site.

Can green tea stop us piling on the pounds?

Weight management is an important issue for many of us, and the benefits of being within a healthy weight range extend to everything from reduced risks of diabetes, to a longer lifespan.

And although we all know that eating sensibly and exercising is a good way to maintain the weight, it's sometimes good to know we can have a helping hand. This is where green tea might come in useful - as a recent study has shown that it may help slow weight gain.

The study revealed the effects after overweight mice were given compund epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) - which is commonly found in green tea. The mice, who were also fed a high fat diet, put on weight 45% more slowly than another group of mice being fed the same diet, without the green tea.

And instead of suppressing the appetite (as green tea is often thought to be useful for) - EGCG was shown to slow down the bodies ability to absorb fat, and help burn it more effectively.

Will you be drinking more green tea to help maintain your weight?

Health news in numbers

News hot off the press.

According to this report, the passing of a low electric current through a specific region of the brain can double your maths ability.

This could change the course of world history - a quick blast of juice through the chancellor's brain prior to every budget, for instance. Maybe one day private healthcare will offer a brain zap before any job interview or exam involving numbers.

For now though, the numberly ungifted among us will have to stick to using a calculater, chewing a pen cap and scratching our heads.

National Health Service complaints rise

Reported across a number of media today is the news that the NHS's complaints level has risen at a record rate over the last year.

A staggering 42% of the complaints were made against medical professionals.

It's not easy to see how the government will navigate their way through a situation with this level of dissatisfaction on the one hand, and the "reshaping" of the organisation on the other. I put the word "reshaping" into quote marks there, as I'm unsure what shape it can eventually be under the circumstances, except 'cheaper shaped'.

As an occasional service user, I've (thankfully) had little reason to complain, but things have definitely been less than perfect. Definitely time to think about getting a health insurance quote - makes sense now more than ever.

But it's not all doom and gloom, and after the birth of his new baby yesterday, PM David Cameron was all smiles.
