Child Health Insurance Tips- Finding the Best Health Insurance for Your Child

By Sally Simmons

Health is everything. No matter what wonderful dreams you have for your child, their health trumps them all. Keeping your child healthy will allow them to chase their dreams. And good health insurance can help keep them healthy.

Having good child health insurance will allow you to make sure your child gets all the preventative care that he or she needs. And if anything unfortunate does happen, good health insurance coverage will help you to get the best medical attention you can, giving your child the best chance at a full recovery and a healthy life.

If you don't have good health insurance coverage for your child, you may skip the necessary and regular check-ups at the doctor that a child needs. And this could cause bigger problems as the child gets older.

While health insurance is getting more and more expensive, there are still a variety of different plans that make it possible for you to find something that works within your budget and still takes care of your child.

Different kinds of health insurance policies can cover a variety of different medical needs such as hospital care, medical coverage with advanced surgeries and therapies, clinical check ups, etc. Other aspects such as vision, dental, and medical equipment like wheelchairs may be included in the health plan.

Having a variety of health insurance plans that cover a mix of these topics can help you to find child health insurance coverage that will fit within your financial budget. And as your situation changes over time, you can alter your health plan as well.

Researching health insurance is time consuming and not a lot of fun. However, there aren't many more important things you can be doing and by researching thoroughly and looking into a variety of different health insurance plans, you will be able to find a plan that's most appropriate for you at the best price available.

How Do Low Income Families Find An Affordable Family Health Insurance Plan?

By Donald Saunders

Although rising healthcare costs mean that it is not as easy as it used to be to find an affordable family health insurance plan, you can still find a plan which meets your budget providing you are willing to do some research.

Start by doing some comparison shopping using the Internet which gives you easy access to an enormous number of health insurance companies. Select several companies from your search and get a quote online by completing the simple application form which nearly all of the sites will provide. Before starting your search though you will find it helpful to write down some basic information about yourself and your family's medical history which will make filling in the forms a little easier.

As soon as you have a number of quotes, pick those which look suitable at first sight and then consider the cover that each plan provides carefully and compare the plans to see which will give you the cover you are looking for at the price you can afford.

In reviewing each quote you should be aware of some common pitfalls.

You will find for example that there are a large number of great looking deals around with extremely affordable premiums but, on investigation, you will often find that these affordable premiums only apply to the first year of cover and that your premiums then rise considerably in the second and subsequent years.

You will also discover that a large number of companies offer low premiums as long as you do not make a claim against the policy. Once a claim is made however your premiums will rise markedly when it comes time to renew the plan.

A common problem with many low premium plans is that the health insurance company will either ask you to pay a substantial number of your medical bills before they will begin to pay out, or will pay only a small percentage of each bill. In the vast majority of cases you will be required to contribute towards you medical costs and this is typically set at around 10% or 20% of each bill. In exchange for a low monthly premium the health insurance company may however raise this figure, to perhaps as high as 30% or 40%, which can end up costing you a great deal in the longer term.

Many plans will also dazzle you with the huge range of things that they cover, but is this really necessary? If your family is reasonably young, fit and healthy and has not had to visit your doctor for some time then you might think about simply selecting a plan that covers you for accidents and emergencies and will take care of hospital bills and the cost of surgical treatment.

Select a policy which suits your needs, rather than a plan which appears to be the biggest and best and reduce your costs by taking out only the insurance that you need. If you want to have all of the 'bells and whistles' then you can always increase you cover at a later date when your finances permit.

Finding a suitable plan is not easy but, with a little bit of time and effort, it is certainly not impossible to find the affordable family health insurance plan that you need.

Does Your Employer Have to Provide Health Insurance?

By Barry Waxler

Many people ask the question, “does your employer have to provide Health Insurance”? The answer is no, but several potential Presidential candidates are suggesting that they should.

Many people are confused about the issue of employer sponsored health insurance. In the good old days, which were really not that long ago, group health insurance plans that were available from employers were the most common form of health insurance. They were called the good old days for a reason. These group health plans were good for everyone involved. The premiums were low to the consumer; the employers paid only a small amount of the cost of the plan; Insurance Companies were able to make good profits; and everyone was covered for pretty much any medical condition that came along.

What changed all this? The culprit was the ever increasing cost of medical care in the United States. The employer based group plans were forced to increase their premiums to keep up with these increasing costs, and there was only so much of it that could be passed on to the employee. It was the employer’s share of the costs that rose the most dramatically. The Insurance Companies were forced to come up with solutions to a problem they had not caused. The good old days were over.

Yet, many employers continued to offer plans. In fact, so many large scale employers did so that it is generally assumed that they had to do it. What was the reason they kept up trying to provide health insurance for their employees despite rising costs? The answer is that health insurance had become an expected benefit and this benefit was closely associated with the status of the employer. In some cases, Union contracts mandated that health insurance be provided, but in non-Union companies, the failure to offer health insurance was seen as a major indicator that a Company was not a very good place to work. Employers had to compete for the best employees and were forced to offer this benefit even as they cut other fringe benefits to be able to afford it.

Still, smaller employers were just unable to provide it and the number of uninsured Americans has risen steadily until many people consider this a major problem today. Several Democratic candidates have proposed plans that would make it mandatory that all employers either offer health insurance to their employees or else contribute to a national plan that would be modeled after Medicare without the age eligibility requirements. Providing funds for health insurance would become a requirement for doing business in America.

The Insurance Industry has been doing a good job with the introduction of creative plans that have cut the costs of health insurance and exerted pressure on the Medical profession to control their costs as well. It would be most helpful if more individuals would recognize the true nature of the problem. Those who are receiving health insurance benefits from their employers should be thankful, and should make an effort to understand and appreciate just what this is costing their employers. They should understand also the effects of these costs on their other benefits, including their wages and the costs of the goods produced. Health Insurance is in crisis and there is no easy answer. Informed people will be able to make the best decisions both for themselves and the country as well.

Working in the Health Insurance Industry

By Thomas Morris Jr.

Most men go to work, say hi to the few females in the office and sit down to talk about the hockey or basketball game that was on last night.

I miss that! I sit down in my office after saying hi to one or two guys and listen to the little dog that was dressed up cute or the clothes the girls are wearing and where they got them. HELP!

Seriously, Men are from Mars and Women are from any planet that has a sale on clothes. For example, last night I watched the Buffalo Sabres tear apart yet another opponent 7-2. With seven goals scored in one period, which is amazing. I came into work to talk about the game and … I hear, "that's a nice shirt," and "where did you get that jacket?"

Don't get me wrong, I am a man and it's nice to work around women. But the conversations are very lacking when it comes to anything to do with sports or talking about women, which are two things that men do most often. Believe it or not women talk about what their husband's do wrong, how they are always right and clothes.

I guess in my profession it makes sense to have women, whom generally like to talk on the phone and with their friends, be call center representatives. But where have all the sports fanatics gone? That's not to say females don't talk about sports, but they don't pay attention to whom scored, how many goals were tallied, and how well each player played. Women pay attention to who's the cutest guy and how many scores or extra points (we live in a football society) they acquired.

Which brings up a point, women watch sports for the cutest guy or how he looks in his uniform and men don't get mad. But when men watch fashion shows for the hottest girl and how she looks in her Victoria's Secret underwear, there will be a bruising. Yet another sign of Men are from Mars and Women are from any planet that has a sale on clothes.

So to get all my sports talk out … The Buffalo Sabres scored seven goals against the Tampa Bay Lightning last night and Coach John Tortorella, didn't pull the goalie, Marc Denis. I remembered back to when Coach Mario Tremblay left Patrick Roy in goal for a 12-1 loss to Detroit in 1995 for the Montreal Canadiens, subsequently his last game for the Habs. Could this cause a problem with Mr. Denis and the Lightning?

When I was watching the game it was like the Sabres were playing on the Pro level of any NHL video game, didn't like to be losing and so set the game on a rookie setting for the second period. Once all the goals were tallied and morale was down for Tampa Bay, Buffalo again returned to the Pro setting allowing one goal and being unable to find the net.

In today's National Hockey League, when was the last time you saw a team destroy it's opponent and not get a single point from it's top forward line? That happened for the very deep Sabres, whose top line consists of fan favorite's Jochen Hecht, Daniel Briere and Jason Pominville.

The Lightning on the other hand had to count on their top line to get just two goals, both by Tampa Bay's leading scorer Martin St. Louis. That's the kind of great fact that only guys would talk about. When I did get to talk about hockey a female colleague of mine said, " Yeah that young guy Danny Pi-something, he scored two goals," I was so impressed, but then she added, "He's so Hot!"

Well I am sure Daniel Paille is very happy to know he's Hot and I am happy to know I get to talk about some hockey, even if I have to fill in the blanks. By the way to prove that Men are from Mars and Women are from any planet that has a sale on clothes. My colleague, who is making an attempt at understanding sports, said she was happy the Sabres beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers! (again, we live in a football society).

So, the next time you guys walk into your office appreciate what you have, as I try to do the same. You have a few women and all the sports talk you can handle, I have my sports thoughts and … well I guess that's obvious, all the clothes talk I can handle.

Pet Health Insurance

By sandra bell

CHANGES IN VETRINARIAN COSTS AND PET HEALTH INSURANCE

Veterinary medicine has changed dramatically in the past few years and many pet owners wonder if they should buy pet health insurance for Fido and Fluffy.

These days Spot can get about the same type of health car as can his owner. Available to him are cancer treatments, pacemakers, EKGs, joints replacement, ultrasound and on and on. Ten years ago we would automatically euthanize Spot for conditions that can now be treated. But we are in a quandary: can we and do we want to spend the thousands of dollars it may take to treat Fido's cancer. As we hold his paw through the night, we wonder if we should have taken out pet health insurance.

WHAT IS PET HEALTH INSURANCE?

Pet health insurance is much like people insurance although it has only been around for about twenty years and although only from one to two percent of all pets are insured. Pet health insurance has deductible, co-payments, limitations, and premiums. Some plans cover routine exams and vaccinations. Costs are based on species, age, pre-existing conditions, and even lifestyle. For example, are Spot and his owner couch potatoes or do they get out daily for a brisk walk? Is Fluffy strictly an indoor cat or does she spend most of her time in the dangerous out of doors? Premiums range from $11 to $30 per month and the average deductible is about $100. Most plans pay approximately 80% of costs once the deductible has been met. There are many, many pet health insurance plans listed on the Internet but be beware. Over the past 20 years pet health insurance pet health insurance plans have come and gone with only one, Veterinary Pet Insurance, lasting. If you do buy a plan, be very careful and make sure that your plan is one that your vet accepts.

WILL PET HEALTH INSURANCE BE GOOD FOR FIDO AND ALSO FOR MY FINANCIAL HEALTH?

Consumer Reports took Lucky, an imaginary Labrador Retriever, through eleven years of life. Among nine common ills were a cut, a torn ligament, an ear infection and a broken leg. Of five pet health insurance companies compared, not one was cheaper over the eleven years span of time than if the owner had paid the bills out of pocket. When they added up premiums, deductibles, co-payments, un-reimbursed costs and exclusions, the costs were sometimes thousands of dollars more with pet health insurance.

Lucky then got an imaginary hip replacement and still some of the plans didn't save any money. Consumer Reports recommends against buying pet health insurance and instead suggests setting up a special savings account for Lucky.

Although, Consumer Reports doesn't mention it, doing routine checkups, shots, and dental work are important. While this may seem costly, it can prevent much more expensive illness in the future.

And before you get Fido, Spot, and Fluffy, make darn sure you can afford health care costs for three pets.
